What's it all about?

Over the past couple of months we have been able to provide POP server capabilities to the websites we design. This obviously enhances the website and allows multiple email services for our clients. By the end of June 2000 we expect to have extended the service to the General Public, who can now have their own email POPped using most programmes currently being used today (see below for instructions). You now have the capability of using one of four specific URL Domain names operational by Mynet Ltd:

yourname@mynet.co.nz
yourname@ekiwi.net.nz
yourname@nzthings.com
yourname@nztrades.com

One of the disadvantages of several of the new breed of FREE providers in New Zealand is that they operate web based email systems, just like hotmail, yahoo, zzn, webmail and all those yourname email systems from usa.net. The advantage of POP mail systems is that the mail is popped or sent to your browser where you can read it off line, respond to the mail and then go back online and send it.

For POP email systems to work you need to different operating systems - POP to retrieve and SMTP to send email. If your browser supports SMTP and you would like to own a new email address from ekiwi, nzthings or mynet or nztrades then you need to send a request to check the your user name is still available. We will respond with an email which will have conformation of email address and suggestions if your first choice is unavailable. Once this has been accepted we will send you with your unique ID Number. You can either follow the set up procedures for you operating system from the detailed instructions or give us a call and we can run through the setup systems with you over the phone.

The costs

The cost for each email account (including the 5 alias names) is only $10.00 per month - Direct Debit or Credit Card transaction are required.  Please use the Information Form to request your specific email address - we will then contact you in person and guide you through the process of setting up your systems. Eventually you will be able to have processed online in real time and the guides will be on the links below, but in the interim please bear with us on this. Thank you.

What is a POP Server ?

The POP server component of Post.Office is responsible for handling POP3 e-mail client requests to download messages. The POP3 protocol is the most common method of retrieving messages from a mail server, and allows users to download mail to their local system, where it can be read, replied to, deleted, ignored, etc. This server operates independently of the Post.Office MTA, except for the fact that they refer to a common accounts database.

The POP server receives inquiries directly from the network according to the POP3 protocol. When an e-mail client contacts the POP server, it provides a login name and a password for a particular user. The POP server then checks with the accounts database to confirm that an existing account corresponds to the given login name, and that the given password is correct for this account. If the login information is found to be valid, the POP server then answers subsequent client commands to list and download the messages waiting in the account’s Post.Office mailbox.

For maximum security, access to retrieving mail from the POP server can be limited to specific domains or hosts which is at the discretion of the webmaster.  Find out how to set up your POP servers below.
